郭石夫先生,乙酉之岁,生于京师,祖籍津门。其花鸟之作,博综群萃,渊源深厚,远追近现代之吴缶庐、潘天寿、齐白石、朱屺瞻诸巨擘,溯至扬州二李、八大山人、二石、青藤白阳,皆为己用,蔚为一派。其笔墨沉雄朴厚,古雅刚正,磅礴大气,而不染犷悍之习;洒脱自然,内具坚贞之质。一花一叶,寸草泰石,皆深合理法,情态备极,而不坠“创新”之虚名,未流狂怪之风。

Guo Shifu, born in the year of Yiyou, hails from Beijing with ancestral roots in Tianjin. His flower-and-bird paintings are a comprehensive collection of the essence of various styles, drawing from modern masters such as Wu Changshuo, Pan Tianshou, Qi Baishi, and Zhu Qizhan, tracing back to the likes of the Yangzhou Eccentrics, the Eight Eccentrics, Shi Tao, and Xu Wei. He integrates these influences into his own unique style. His brushwork is vigorous and robust, elegant and upright, grand without being coarse; his art exudes natural ease, with an inherent firmness and integrity. Every flower and leaf, every blade of grass and rock, is meticulously rendered with profound understanding of principles, full of lifelike vitality, never falling into the trap of mere "innovation" for the sake of novelty or devolving into frivolity.

先生之创作,崇三义焉:一曰“中华文化之精神性”也;二曰“文长风骨,老缶精神”也,传统常新,鲜活如昔;三曰“中画之哲理性”也。此三者,构其思想之纲,立其艺道之本,展现宏深之意境,昭示雅正之旨归。

Mr. Guo’s creation is guided by three principles: firstly, the spiritual essence of Chinese culture; secondly, the scholarly integrity and spirit of traditional masters like Wen Zhengming and Wu Changshuo, keeping tradition alive and fresh; thirdly, the philosophical depth of Chinese painting. These principles form the backbone of his artistic philosophy, laying the foundation for his art, showcasing profound and dignified meaning, and revealing a noble and righteous purpose.

郭石夫先生之绘事,得三旨焉:一曰“大”。此“大”有二义:一为“境界之大”,先生不屑于小桥流水之细琐,苦心追求黄钟大吕之雄浑,故自镌闲章“天地吾庐”、“如此豪情”、“豪横人间笔一枝”以励志;二为“尺幅之大”,亦自镌“大处着墨”与“动而不息”之印以自勉。二曰“笔墨精神”。先生之花鸟,泼墨如泼水,画面淋漓墨气,彩色仅为点睛之笔。三曰“天然去雕饰”,以自然天成为至境,去人工匠气。先生谓人之追美,永无尽头。国画之极致,唯自然天成。观其花鸟,大气磅礴,沉雄朴厚,古雅刚正,气势磅礴而不染犷悍之习,洒脱自然而内蕴坚贞之质,尽显其志焉。

Guo Shifu's art adheres to three key tenets: the first being "greatness." This "greatness" has two aspects: one is the "greatness of realm," as Mr. Guo disdains trivial scenes of "small bridges and flowing water," instead pursuing the grandeur of "great bells and large drums," and thus engraved seals like "Heaven and Earth My Home," "Such Greatness," and "Dominating the World with One Brush" to inspire himself; the other is the "greatness of scale," with seals like "Laying Ink Broadly" and "Endless Movement" to encourage himself. The second tenet is the "spirit of brush and ink." His flower-and-bird paintings use ink as if pouring water, creating a scene rich in ink atmosphere, with color used only for emphasis. The third tenet is "naturalness without embellishment," seeking the highest state of "natural creation," free from artificiality. Mr. Guo believes that the pursuit of beauty by humans is endless. The highest realm of Chinese painting is natural creation. Observing his flower-and-bird works, one sees grandeur, vigor, elegance, and uprightness, with an imposing yet uncoarse air, showing his aspirations.

Guo Shifu’s paintings often feature subjects like plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums, lotuses, wisteria, mynas, and sparrows. These ordinary subjects, under his brush, burst with vibrant energy. Due to shifts in his emotions and aesthetic orientation, his works bear distinct marks of the times and individual characteristics, radiating new splendor. His painting style is highly calligraphic, eschewing meticulous and fine carving, advocating for freehand expression, capturing form with intent, and infusing spirit into the lines. He emphasizes the overall structure of lines and planes, and the relationship between opening and closing. His lines are thick and lively, penetrating the paper, adhering to calligraphic principles. His use of ink and color is solid and unpretentious, emphasizing the balance between reality and void, and the overall momentum, linking the tangible with the intangible, the concrete with the abstract.
