Du Xun, also known as Yingxin, is a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang. He was born in Shanghai in the year of Gengchen. During his youth, he was immersed in the lush mountains and rivers of eastern Zhejiang, and harbored a deep affection for the idyllic scenery of Jiangnan's water towns. In the year of Yiwei, he entered the affiliated high school of the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts with excellent grades. In the year of Wuxu, he was exceptionally promoted to the Chinese Painting Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, studying under masters such as Pan Tianshou, Lu Yifei, Lu Weizhao, Lu Yanshao, Zhou Changgu, and Li Zhenjian. While in school, he majored in figure painting and was also skilled in landscape painting.

In the late 1980s, Du Xun resided by Qingshan Lake in the Tianmu Mountains, working diligently day and night. The verdant and magnificent scenery there ignited his passionate love for landscape painting. He then made a great vow to thoroughly study the intricacies of landscape painting, meticulously copying masterpieces from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. He especially took the Northern Song painter Zhang Zeduan's "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" as his model, due to its dynamic composition, grand scenes, harmonious lines, and lifelike depiction of figures and landscapes. Du Xun meticulously copied this painting multiple times, each time taking more than four months. He often worked day and night, tirelessly exploring the essence of Chinese long scrolls, and carefully studying the artist's extraordinary skills and expressive abilities in summarizing life and refining subjects.

Du Xun has been engaged in art for more than half a century and has achieved great success, publishing dozens of painting albums, monographs, and papers. His figure paintings feature refined and smooth lines, with ink and color transitioning from skillful to simplistic, capturing the essence of nature effortlessly. His landscape paintings are vast in subject matter, with boundless vision and profound connotations. He is skilled in creating large paintings and long scrolls, particularly excelling in Jiangnan snow scenes rendered in light ink and subtle colors. His occasional finger paintings are also full of charm. Whether depicting the misty rain of Jiangnan or the vast landscapes of the northern regions, whether capturing exotic foreign scenes or the grandeur of China's rivers and mountains, his works are imbued with a deep reverence for nature and a passionate dedication to the art of painting.

Du Xun's monumental landscape scrolls have made a significant impact on the art world, earning him widespread acclaim. His snow scene landscapes, in particular, are regarded as a unique "Du style." These snow scenes often draw inspiration from the winter landscapes of Jiangnan's water towns, using the cun (wrinkling) paper technique. His paintings feature exaggerated and unique compositions, refined and distinctive brushwork, and a dominant black tone complemented by light colors, with large areas of pristine white space. This creates a painting that is both lush and elegant, yet filled with a sense of vastness and depth, achieving a dreamlike and transcendent realm.

Du Xun's modeling techniques are exceptional, capable of capturing the myriad aspects of the world with ease. However, he does not rest on his laurels with mere technical proficiency. To meet the ever-evolving aesthetic demands and the diverse subjects and characteristics of the times, he constantly seeks innovation, striving for diversity in his work's forms and creating a unique style focused on the concept of "cleverness." This pursuit of "cleverness" yields wondrous results, drawing inspiration from nature to create genuine artistic truth. Viewing Du Xun's works reveals clever ideas and whimsical creativity, sometimes through distortion, sometimes through color changes, sometimes with meticulous detail, and sometimes with simplification. He adheres to traditional Chinese painting techniques like the three distances and the three folds, along with transitions and continuity, while also incorporating Western techniques such as block division and planar composition. All these efforts aim to enhance the aesthetic appeal of his subjects and create striking visual impact.

Du Xun's works are both familiar and sincere. However, he does not confine himself to skilled techniques but emphasizes the pursuit of returning from skill to simplicity, akin to returning to simplicity and authenticity after experiencing worldly splendor, which can be described as "returning to the true and plain." This "truth" carries humanistic connotations, and this "plainness" is the simplicity after extreme brilliance. The path of painting progresses from familiarity to skill, and from skill to simplicity, thereby achieving true interest. Skill without familiarity deceives the world; skill without simplicity is pretentious. The so-called "making cleverness appear clumsy" actually refers to the result of proficient yet vivid creation. Du Xun's brushwork, executed with both intention and spontaneity, often encounters unforeseen challenges, blending newness and familiarity, familiarity and newness, with natural brilliance. As it is said, "bring forth new ideas within established rules, and express profound reasoning beyond boldness." High standards are difficult to achieve. His meticulous approach and exploratory results make life more colorful and his works more brilliant, gradually reaching the pinnacle of art.
