It is fascinating. I wouldn't say an amazing destination but if you have to be in Dubai and need to get away from the malls, Deira is where a lot of immigrants live to make it. Unlike the rest of Dubai where that means horribly exploited construction workers, this is more like small merchants who have actually been in Dubai for a few generations.It kind of reminds me of Queens in that respect. Only part of Dubai that seemed real. If you are there in the winter, walking around the neighborhood looking at the small shops and street life of Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Persian/Filipino merchants is really cool.
