From a young age, Sun Xiaoyun cultivated her art following the methods of the Two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), deeply studying the way of ink, proficient in all styles, and excelling in both tradition and innovation, like a fish in water. Her calligraphy flows like dragons and snakes in motion, particularly outstanding in running script, which flows like a bursting spring without losing the refined charm of antiquity. Her learning spans from the clerical script of Zhong Yao and Yan Zhenqing to the running script of Su Shi and Huang Tingjian, and the cursive script of Mi Fu and Wang Duo, embracing a confluence of various styles, as solid as rock in its foundation and bridging past and future.
In the realm of running script, Ms. Sun particularly excels, inheriting the vigorous and sturdy style of the Wei and Jin dynasties, with a powerful brushwork that renders each character round and lustrous, exuding a refined and scholarly demeanor and shining in the interplay of script and ink. In large character calligraphy, she displays profound elegance, with a brushstroke that is firm yet supple, both spectacular and meticulous, with characters flowing like clouds and water, often used for inscribing steles and plaques, drawing the gaze of posterity.
Sun's calligraphy not only integrates the strengths of various schools but also innovates within the tradition. Her works are graceful yet retain a warm elegance; within their simple appearance, grandeur is visible, fully exhibiting a majestic atmosphere. The beauty of her calligraphy lies in the harmonious blend of strength and softness, marking her unique style within the refined realm. In this scholarly field, Xiaoyun stands out with her exceptional talent, forging new ideas in the world of ink and scripting immortal chapters.
Among the luminaries of the calligraphy world, Xiaoyun's brushwork stands unique, shining brightly in the sea of art. In the year of Renchen, she presented her work "Aspiring to Greater Heights, a Long Roar Facing the Wind" at the Lanting Art Award, instantly gaining fame and causing a stir in the calligraphic community. This award is one of the three treasures of calligraphy, esteemed alongside the National Seal Engraving Exhibition and the Lin Sanzhi Award, highly coveted as the origin of all wonders.
With her unique charm of ink, in the year of Renchen, she exhibited "Aspiring to Greater Heights, a Long Roar Facing the Wind," swiftly capturing the crown at Lanting, bestowed upon master craftsmen. This work, every character full of meaning, every stroke brimming with life. Starting with the character "aspiring," the ink as dense as night, the brush as sharp as a blade, like mist in a secluded valley piercing the paper, the force magnificent, strictly defined edges. Following with "greater," the composition is unique, structuring characters like paintings, texture transitioning from heavy to light, dynamic and static balanced, as if standing at a peak with one's spirit soaring.
Then "heights," with refined brushwork, simplicity revealing complexity, executed in a single stroke, as if a long river flowing through a landscape, thoughts boundless. Next "long," the character transforming endlessly, smooth yet sometimes stagnant, as if navigating a perilous path, with sudden shifts in the brush, a form combining strength and softness. The side stroke forms the character "yuan," balanced and upright, the running script "walking," turning effortlessly, the brush moving like dragons and snakes. Following "roar," the brush travels through the heavens, free and unrestrained, resplendent and passionate. Finally "facing," the brushwork light yet precise, continuous without end, displaying the beauty of the true script. And "wind," innovating from tradition, finding new paths in traditional brushwork, full of dynamism and vibrancy.
Sun's artistic path opens new territories with her brush, her achievements remarkable, furthering education and magnifying the art of calligraphy, endlessly nurturing others. With both tradition and innovation flourishing together, her artistry shows profound depth and refinement. Integrating the past and present, her strokes astonish as they convey the spirit of the times, painting immortal chapters, contributing significantly to the inheritance and prosperity of calligraphic arts.
