Today’s world could be characterized as an era of widespread globalization which is expanding more and more. The need for mutual respect and understanding across cultural borders is imperative.

Communication between people of different nationalities occurs in all areas of life such as politics, business, trade, education, and others. In order to successfully interact with others, one needs to develop an ‘intercultural communicative competence’. This goes beyond the notion of ‘communicative competence’.

Communicative competence is about using language correctly and in various social settings. It simply means how effectively one can communicate with someone else. This concept, nevertheless, cannot fit in with the complexities of the contemporary world.

Intercultural communicative competence provides the ability for an effective interaction with foreigners. It includes attitude, knowledge, skills, and critical cultural awareness.

Intercultural communication starts with a logical understanding of ourselves. Culture is a pattern of living which influences our behavior and daily routines.

We are unaware of the norms that dictate our own ways of interaction. Once we understand our own customs, then we can begin recognizing others, as well as the individuals practising them.
