down to the wire

该习语主要用来喻指“the decisive moment at the very end of a close contest”,即“势均力敌的比赛结束时的决定性时刻”,相当于汉语里的“最后关头;最后时刻;最后一刻;最终时刻”。

Obviously a final match like this coming down to the wire, you can't get anything better than that.

Negotiators again worked right down to the wire to reach an agreement.

The choice of which candidate to hire came right down to the wire, as there were two applicants1 we liked very much.

They weren't sure which car to buy. But when it came down to the wire, they chose the cheaper one.

As the end of the stand was reached Timarch worked up to Petrel, and the two raced down to the ‘wire,’ cheered on by the applause of the spectators. They ended the first half mile of the race head and head, passing lapped together under the wire, and beginning in earnest the mile which was yet to be traversed.
