down in the dumps

【习语注释】

该习语中的dumps表示“垃圾场；废物堆；讨厌的地方”，但其实该词在中世纪时期并不表示这个意思（可参看本文最后的“闲话习语”里的注释），主要用来喻指“unhappy; depressed”，即“不快乐；沮丧的”，相当于汉语里的“闷闷不乐的；郁郁寡欢的；情绪低落的；精神沮丧的；垂头丧气的”。

Word expert Charles Funk says people have been feeling down in the dumps for more than four-hundred years.

【闲话习语】

该习语中的the dumps不是一个地方，而是一个常见的中世纪短语表达，意思是“沮丧；忧郁；抑郁”。较早的书面使用记录出现在托马斯·莫尔爵士1529年的《安慰苦难的对话》：

What heapes of heauynesse, hathe of late fallen amonge vs alreadye, with whiche some of our poore familye bee fallen into suche dumpes.

从16世纪开始，dumps一词在戏剧和手稿中经常被使用。例如，莎士比亚在1596年的《驯悍记》中多次使用了这个词：

Why, how now, daughter Katharina! in your dumps?
