Donkey work

【习语注释】

该习语的字面意思是“驴干的活”，主要用来喻指“hard work; the least attractive part of any project”，即“艰苦的工作；任何项目中最不吸引人的部分”，相当于汉语里的“单调的苦差事；乏味的事儿；脏活累活；体力活”。

【闲话习语】

该习语原指驴子经常需要搬运重物，在所有驯养和养殖的动物中，驴和骡子最常面临无情的辛劳生活。到了19世纪中叶，在英国，该习语开始被用于比喻意义上，也就是说，这种用法跟驴没有关系了。

该习语较早的书面使用记录出现在英国报纸《西方时报》中（1849年2月）：

You might easily imagine a dialogue going on between the horse and his keepers – the noble animal protesting all the while that he would not do donkey work and demean himself like an ass.

上面这段话的含义是：

你可能很容易想象马和他的饲养员之间的对话——这只高贵的动物一直在抗议他不会干驴活，把自己贬低得像驴一样。
