（一）分类

英语中用来连接并列句的连词称为并列连词，它们可以分为两大类：一类是由单个单词组成的，称为简单并列连词，如and、but等；另一类是由两个单词配对组成的，称为复合并列连词（如both...and...、either...or...等）。

（二）复合并列连词

英语中常用的复合并列连词主要包括：both...and...; either...or...; neither...nor...; not only..., but also...。

（三）both...and...

表示“两者都”，注意其并列两个主语时，其谓语动词始终都用复数形式。如：

He can speak both English and German.

Both Jack and Mary are from France.

Both water and air are important to humans.

（四）either...or...

表示“或者...，或者...；要么...，要么...”，主要用来表示两者居其一。当用来连接两个并列主语时，其谓语动词的单复数遵循就近原则。如：

You can either leave for Beijing or stay at home.

Either he or we are going there by car.

Either we or he is going there by car.

（五）neither...nor...

表示“两者都不；既不...，也不...”。当用来连接两个并列主语时，其谓语动词的单复数遵循就近原则。如：

She can neither speak nor write in Chinese.

Neither you nor Jim is able to solve the problem.

Neither Jim nor you are able to solve the problem.

（六）not only..., but also...

表示“不但...，而且...”。其中but also也可以用but...as well来替换。当用来连接两个并列主语时，其谓语动词的单复数遵循就近原则。如：

We not only gave him many books, but also helped them set up a reading room.

We not only gave him many books, but helped them set up a reading room as well.

Not only she but also his sons were at the party last night.

Not only his sons but also she were at the party last night.
