【习语注释】

该习语中的blue moon的字面意思是“蓝月亮”，但蓝月亮其实不是指蓝色的月亮，而是指天文历法中的一种特殊现象。“蓝月亮”平均每两年半左右就会出现一次，有的年份没有，有的年份会有两次。当一个月出现两次月圆之夜时，第二个满月就被称为“蓝月亮”。once in a blue moon主要用来喻指“很少见”，相当于汉语里的“难得一回；千载难逢；百年不遇；极其难得”。

【闲话习语】

该习语最初的意思并不是“很少见”，而是“不可能”。比如中世纪时期的一位主教William Barlow在他的《the Treatyse of the Buryall of the Masse》（1582年）中这么写道：

"Yf they saye the mone is belewe,We must beleve that it is true."

大约300年多后，该习语才逐渐用来表示“很少见”，比如较早书面使用这个意思的是作家Pierce Egan的《Real Life in London》（1821年）：
