(一)分类
英语中用来连接并列句的连词成为并列连词,它们可以分为两大类:一类是由单个单词组成的,称为简单并列连词,如and、but等;另一类是有两个单词配对组成的,称为复合并列连词(如both...and...、either...or...等)。
(二)简单并列连词
英语中常用的简单并列连词主要包括:and, but, or, so, for, while, yet, nor。
(三)and
and表示“和;而且”,主要用来连接顺承或递进关系的并列句。如:
He stood up and walked towards the door.
She likes apples and she likes red apples better.
(四)but
but表示“但是”,主要用来连接转折关系的并列句。如:
I like chicken, but my husband doesn't.
She tried to get the coins, but it was too late.
(五)or
or表示“或者;否则”,主要用来连接选择或转折关系。试比较:
Did he give him a book or a pen just now?
Stay calm, or you may fail the test.
(六)so
so表“因此;所以”,主要用来连接表结果的并列句。如:
They started early this morning, so they arrived there on time.
He is in charge of the firm, so you may ask him for help.
(七)for
for表“因为”,主要用来来接表原因的并列句,起着补充说明作用,但其引导的句子不能位于句首。如:
It must have rained last night, for the street is wet all over.
(八)while
表“然而;而”,主要用来连接对比关系的并列句。如:
She is fond of pop music while he is interested in jazz.
(九)yet
yet表“然而”,主要用来连接转折关系的并列句,可以与and连用。如:
It's a small car, yet it's surprisingly spacious.
He has a good job, and yet he never seems to have any money.
(十)nor
nor表示“也不;也没有”,主要用来连接与前文内容相同的并列句,常用倒装结构,相当于neither。如:
She doesn't like them and nor does Jeff.
There was no physical contact, nor did I want any.
