该习语起源于美国电影业，许多早期的无声电影都是以汽车追逐镜头结尾。该习语的第一次使用可以追溯到那个时代，就在1927年第一部有声电影《爵士歌手》之后。下面是约瑟夫·帕特里克·麦克沃伊1929年小说《好莱坞女孩》的剧本说明：

“Jannings escapes… Cut to chase.”

该习语的比喻用法，即“切中要害”的含义出现在20世纪40年代。温尼伯自由出版社1944年3月发表了一篇关于荧幕写作的文章，其中包括：

“Miss [Helen] Deutsch has another motto, which had to do with the writing of cinematic drama. It also is on the wall where she cant miss seeing it, and it says: 'When in doubt, cut to the chase.'”
