【习语注释】

该习语中的chalk表示“粉笔”，cheese表示“奶酪”，这是两种完全不同的东西，所以chalk and cheese用来表示“two things that are very different from each other”，即“两种截然不同的东西”，而as different as chalk and cheese就相当于汉语里的“截然不同；完全不同；天壤之别；迥然不同；天差地别”。

【闲话习语】

该习语的最早书面使用记录来自中世纪时期英国的诗人和作家约翰﹒高尔（John Gower），他在其作品《Confessio Amantis》中曾经这样写道：

"Lo, how they feignen chalk for chese."

但是，关于Gower为何选择chalk和cheese来比喻完全不同无从查证，但可以推断的是，Gower很可能是从韵律的角度考虑的，因为chalk和cheese符合头韵（Alliteration）的效果。所谓“头韵”，是指两个或多个并列的单词，其开头的辅音是相同的。比如：

clean and clear

big and dark
