Each Milan Design Week is an evolution of the contemporary design language, where materials, craftsmanship and space emotions are once again the subject of discussion. David Rockwell and Casa Cork explore the future of Cork, while Movimento Gallery inject the philosophy of 'imperfection' into everyday objects through the Marks of Existence. Although the two are different, they have guided the design field to re-examine the material, nature and perception.

The "STRATA" joint exhibition presented by three pioneering Belgian designers and the "L 'Appartamento" curated by Artemest show the "locality" and "immersion" in the contemporary design context in two distinct but equally delicate ways, launching a deep discussion on multiple perceptions and local aesthetics.

Casa Cork, by Rockwell Group, pushes the sustainable material "Cork" to center stage and upends stereotypes. The focal point of the exhibition space is a six-meter-tall "cork tree" scanned and 3D printed by Factum Arte based on a real cork tree, expressing the symbiotic relationship between nature and artificial creation.

Commenting on the Casa Cork, David Rockwell, Founder and President of the Rockwell Group, said: "We spent two years concepturing and imagining what the Casa Cork would look like and I couldn't be more excited to see it come to life in a way that exceeded our expectations.”

The variety and expressivity of cork furniture and installations throughout the space - from the custom-made chandeliers and bar by Artemest, to the wall lamps by Thomas Cooper Studio, to the fabric walls by 4Spaces - highlight the acoustic and tactile benefits of cork. The exhibition also features interactive galleries and workshops that allow visitors to experience the charm of the materials through an immersive experience.

According to Rockwell, Casa Cork is not only an exploration of materials, but also an exercise in "how to find new connections with nature in design”.

During the Milan International Furniture Fair (April 7-13), Belgian designers Tim Vranken, Middernacht & Alexander and Linde Freya Tangelder collaborated to create a scene that spans materials, craftsmanship and structure. The title of the exhibition "STRATA" implies the material superposition and time accumulation between the works, and each exhibit is like a geological structure, recording the story between the designer and the material.

Linde Freya Tangelder brings architectural furniture made of steel, stone, brass and other materials. Tim Vranken continues his use of the pure texture of logs to show the silent beauty of Belgian woodworking.

STRATA brings together the new andic works of the three major design studios, presenting their respective design expressions in a unified scene narrative. This curatorial approach emphasizes the intermingling of layers between their works while preserving space for individual expression - highlighting each designer's unique creative path by exploring the intersection and differences of their ideas.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Artemest, Italy's leading craft and design platform, has announced that it will host its third edition of the iconic L 'Appartamento exhibition in the historic Palazzo Donizetti. Six leading international designers and their teams - Simone Haag, 1508 London, Champalimaud Design, Meyer Davis, Nebras Aljoaib and Romanek Design Studio transformed each of the six rooms in the palace, and developed the narrative of the space based on the Italian workshop and artisan brand in collaboration with Artemest platform.

The art tour arrives at the restaurant created by Los Angeles-based Romanek Design Studio - soaring ceilings, original parquet floors and plenty of natural light create a sanctuary of breath-taking silence. In it, time seems to slow down. A calm posture embraces the grand scale of the space itself, transforming what could otherwise be an oppressive site into a peaceful residence that is both aesthetic and practical.

Drawing inspiration from the echoes of siren legends to the glorious past, the Grand Salon by studio Meyer Davis invites visitors to enter a poetic world between past and present, fantasy and reality - the "Song of the Siren". Elegant colors, natural stone and textured metal complement the frescoes of the dome. Sculptural lighting and mirror materials dance together to create a rhythm of light and shadow.

The tour of Artemest's L'Appartamento exhibition culminates in a bedroom space created by Champalimaud Design - a fantastic cinematic aesthetic. Inspired by the golden age of Italian cinema in the 1960s, the New York design house conceived the bedroom as a sexy yet fun and private retreat: a place for friends to gather before and after a night out party, and an affectionate homage to the "la Dolce vita" in the luxurious Donizetti palace.

The reading room and studio created by Saudi interior designer Nebras Aljoaib reconstructs the vocabulary ofical architecture in a contemporary way. Gilt molding and arched niches continue the elegance of the historical space, while sculptural furniture and bold mid-century modern style elements inject a fresh perception into the space.

The recreation room, created by 1508 London, reinterprets the 19th-century salon space and transforms it into a vibrant place for social interaction and creativity. Inspired by the interiors of the world's top members' clubs - examples of timeless details combined with homey charm. This carefully designed space creates 15 unique "design moments" designed to create a comfortable atmosphere that promotes deep dialogue, surprising in every detail.

Stepping into a space designed by Australian designer Simone Haag, you feel like you are at a critical point between the past and the future, a masterful fusion of the generational wisdom and craftsmanship that define Italian design. Elaborate frescoes, intricate marble mosaics and jeweled chandeliers that drop to the floor complement the progressive art display. The rich tones of the mural flow onto the modern furniture with smooth lines, creating a resonant movement that transcends the era.

At the same time, Movimento Gallery and Spazio Vento presented the Marks of Existence series inspired by the three Dharma seals of Buddhism: the impermanence of the actions, the non-self of the Dharma, and the silence of Nirvana. The collection was originally created by nine (now eleven) artists who collaborated with Movimento, all of whom projected their personal style and aesthetic tone into their work, and transformed the texture and imperfections of natural materials into an aesthetic expression.

Travertino Ascolano cave stone is a traditional stone rooted in many cultures, and is also one of the core materials of the exhibition, whose irregular texture and color layers serve as a source of inspiration for designers. The wooden Ikat weaving, based on traditional craftsmanship, is also re-interpreted in this exhibition, showing the "imperfect beauty of handwork", while also echoing the natural origin of the material itself.

The exhibition features two new works: Moreno Vannini's sculptural Bench, Almost Soft Bench, and CARA DAVIDE's Broca Side Table both explore a "process aesthetic" that emphasizes the evolution of matter and its lingering traces of time.

All four exhibitions take the material itself as the protagonist, giving it deep cultural meaning and emotional resonance. Beyond functionality, it opens up a conversation about how we connect with the world. Design, as these exhibitions show, is no longer a stacking of formal languages, but a three-dimensional representation of touch, memory and spirituality.
