Protecting Yang Qi: a key Proposition in Modern Medical treatment

In today's society, with the continuous progress of science and technology and the accelerated pace of life, people's health is facing unprecedented challenges. Academician Tong Xiaolin, an authoritative expert with profound attainments in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, put forward an enlightening point of view: there are five significant differences between today's society and ancient times. This insight not only profoundly reveals the root causes of modern people's illness, but also points out the direction for our treatment.

First of all, the significant improvement in economic conditions has brought about a high incidence of metabolic diseases in the whole society. Today, the table is full of delicacies, full of fat and sweet flavor. However, this seemingly rich diet has quietly become the invisible killer of the yang of the spleen and stomach. Excessive intake of high-calorie and high-fat foods not only increases the burden on the spleen and stomach, but also leads to the prevalence of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Just like a patient who has a long-term appetite for fat and sweet food, which eventually leads to the weakness of spleen and stomach function, Yang Qi damage, and mental malaise all day long, this is a vivid example of overeating fat and sweet food hurting Yang.

Secondly, with the advent of an aging society, geriatric diseases have become increasingly prominent. With the increase of age, the kidney qi of the human body gradually declines, and the depletion rate of kidney yang, as the foundation of yang qi, is also accelerated. Many elderly people have symptoms such as cold limbs, sore waist and knees due to kidney qi deficiency, which is a direct manifestation of the gradual depletion of kidney yang. An octogenarian, due to deficiency of kidney qi, often feels weak in the waist and knees, frequent nocturnal urination, and a great discount in his quality of life. This is the pain of geriatric diseases brought about by an aging society.

In addition, although the rapid development of modern medical technology has saved countless lives, it has also brought the problem of chronic disease management. The long-term existence of chronic diseases not only consumes the physical resources of patients, but also consumes Yang Qi invisibly. A patient who has been suffering from high blood pressure for many years has been taking antihypertensive drugs for a long time. Although his blood pressure has been controlled, his physique is getting weaker and weaker. If he is not careful, he will catch a cold and have a fever. This is the true portrayal of long illness and dark consumption of Yang Qi.

In addition, with the acceleration of the pace of life and the increase of work pressure, the psychological burden of modern people is becoming increasingly heavy. This invisible pressure not only affects people's mood, but also quietly consumes the "heart yang". A workplace elite, due to long-term overtime stay up late, high mental tension, resulting in palpitations, insomnia, depression, this is a typical case of "heart yang depletion".

Finally, the abuse of air conditioners, cold drinks and antibiotics in the modern way of life also unwittingly accelerates the dissipation of yang. Hot summer, air-conditioning cold wind blowing directly, although cool for a while, but easy to hurt lung yang; cold winter, cold drink entrance, more damage to the spleen and stomach yang. On the other hand, the abuse of antibiotics not only kills 1000 enemies, but also destroys 800, destroying the balance of yin and yang in the human body.

In view of the above, Dr Leung Shijie feels deeply about the importance of protecting Yang Qi in the process of treatment and recuperation. He believes that Yang Qi is the foundation of human life, and only by preserving Yang Qi can we have more vitality. In the process of treatment, we should not only intervene for the disease itself, but also pay more attention to the Yang Qi of the patients. For example, for patients with metabolic diseases, in addition to controlling diet and strengthening exercise, traditional Chinese medicine for warming yang and invigorating the spleen should be properly used to recuperate; for elderly patients, attention should be paid to warming and tonifying kidney yang in order to delay the process of kidney qi decline; for patients with chronic diseases, it is necessary to strengthen yang and consolidate foundation in long-term treatment; for patients with high psychological stress, psychological counseling and emotional therapy of traditional Chinese medicine should be used to invigorate heart yang. As for those who dissipate Yang Qi due to improper lifestyle, they should be guided to change their bad habits so as to restore the balance of yin and yang.

In a word, protecting Yang Qi is a key proposition in modern medical treatment. Only when we are deeply aware of the importance of Yang Qi in human health and pay full attention to it in the process of treatment, can we better help patients recover their health and revive their vitality.
