根据公元前3世纪，罗马共和国时期的剧作家普劳图斯 (Plautus) 描述，每当一出戏演完后，主角总会走上前一步，跟台下观众说 Valete et plaudite，英文的意思就是 Goodbye and applause，即向观众道别，并索要掌声。applaud (鼓掌) 正是出自 plaudite，词根 plaud 表示拍手和发出巨响。

如果演员演砸了，观众会喝倒彩，甚至把演员轰下台，拉丁语叫 explōdere，英文单词 explode 即源于该词，虽然这个单词现在最常用的意思为"爆炸"，但仍保留"推翻"这一最初词义。explode 的词根 plod 含义与 plaud 相同。
