Having first risen to fame in the 1990s, influential supermodel Amber Valletta remains very much in demand, fronting campaigns for such luxury brands as Loewe, Saint Laurent, Stella MeCartney,and many others. But she is also a leading climate change activist: She serves as British Vogue's contributing, sustainability editor and the Karl Lagerfeld brand's sustainability ambassador, and has participated in several of Jane Fonda's Fire Drill Fridays protests in Washington, DC.Valletta strives to integrate her eco-friendly philosophy into every corner of her life, including her home. Consequently, she, along with her fiancé and friends, collaborated with interior designer Ross Cassidy from Diaz + Alexander Studio to undertake a comprehensive and thorough reimagining of both the indoor and outdoor designs. Their aim was to enhance the sustainability of the space and seamlessly integrate it with its surrounding environment.

Ross Cassidy wired the house for solar panels, which will be installed on the roof once delivered. There is a high demand for solar panels in California, leading to a backlog, which is a positive sign. They installed double-glazed windows, a requirement for new constructions in California, which also help with thermal insulation. Additionally, they clad much of the exterior with responsibly sourced dove gray and sand-hued stone from Eco Outdoor in Los Angeles. Cassidy pointed out that light-colored stone reflects sunlight, keeping the house cooler, and that stone is durable and requires no maintenance. He added that midcentury houses across Los Angeles often featured stone walls.

For the interior walls, Valletta wanted to avoid conventional paint, which often emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—chemicals that can be carcinogenic. Instead, she and Cassidy opted for natural clay plaster from Clayworks in Cornwall, England, tinted with natural pigments and manipulated to create smooth and fluted textures. In the summer, the plaster helps keep the house cool, while in winter, it warms up and retains heat.

The decorative aspects also embody the concept of environmental protection. Instead of filling the entire house with brand-new furniture, Valletta chose to refurbish the pieces she already owned, such as a pair of American-made BDDW chairs she acquired from her friend and model Carolyn Murphy. Similarly, Valletta's old kitchen chairs underwent such a transformation, where the existing paint was stripped away and the seats were re-covered with beige linen fabric.Valletta also thoughtfully curated a collection of vintage items for decoration, including a Murano glass chandelier sourced from a Parisian flea market. Additionally, she incorporated local handicrafts, such as the cabinet knobs in the library, which were handmade by Lisa Eisner, a Los Angeles-based photographer, publisher, and jewelry designer. The carpets are woven from natural fibers, while the linen fabrics, curtain materials, and soft furnishings are all made from organic or sustainable materials. The production process of natural fiber fabrics is more environmentally friendly compared to synthetic fibers or polyester materials, and their textures offer a more elegant feel.

At the entrance of the hall, a tree from The Haus Plant stands elegantly in a vintage Peruvian ceramic planter. The floor is paved with oak wood selected by Eco Outdoor, blending natural texture with eco-friendly principles. In the center of the hall, a photograph by Craig McDean hangs quietly. As one's gaze shifts, the beautifully shaped lamps designed by Linley add a warm ambiance to the space with their soft lighting. Upon closer inspection, details such as drawer pulls and hooks are crafted by Rocky Mountain Hardware. Together, they create an entrance hall that is both artistically rich and warmly comfortable.

In the kitchen and breakfast room, vintage-style stools are ingeniously designed to be tucked under the island, combining space-saving efficiency with practicality. A vintage French farmhouse dining table stands as the focal point of the space, surrounded by oak dining chairs designed by Emil Lagoni Valbak, creating a warm and elegant dining atmosphere. Looking up, suspension lights from Apparatus illuminate the entire space with their unique designs, complementing the wall sconces designed by Rose Uniacke. The sink fittings are of the high-quality Rohl brand, while the cooking equipment is from the top-tier Wolf brand. Additionally, the walls are thoughtfully adorned with works by artists Richard Serra (on the left) and Brice Marden (on the right), infusing the kitchen and breakfast room with boundless artistic charm.

Furthermore, the custom walls in the living room are the handiwork of Clayworks.

Designer Ross Cassidy meticulously crafted the bedding and rug for the master bedroom, creating a cozy and inviting space for rest and relaxation. The Roman shades, skillfully made by Everhem, add an elegant touch to the bedroom. Indoor greenery sourced from The Haus Plant brings vitality and energy to the space. The bedside table, designed by Disc Interiors, is minimalist yet practical. The table lamp, meanwhile, is a masterpiece by Blackman Cruz.

The master bathroom is equipped with Rohl plumbing fixtures. The floor is adorned with elegant and durable limestone, while the walls feature customized clay plaster by Clayworks, offering a unique and textured appearance. A vintage Italian wall sconce hangs on the wall, adding an artistic touch to the bathroom. Nearby, a practical and stylish Pinetti leather laundry basket completes the look.

Outside, Valletta and Charles planted a desert garden that requires minimal water and scattered wildflower seeds on the hillside behind the house. They’ve spotted owls by the pool, hawks circling above, as well as bobcats, coyotes, butterflies, and praying mantises, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

On the terrace, there are meticulously selected Roger Capron chairs and tables, sourced from Paris's flea market, boasting aic design dating back to the 1950s. The hanging basket lights, meanwhile, were serendipitously discovered during a trip to Saint-Tropez, adding a touch of uniqueness to the terrace. The walls cleverly incorporate natural stone, perfectly complemented by pristine white cedar wood panels, while the ground is paved with eco-friendly recycled cobblestones. Every detail exudes a sense of nature and harmony. This series of landscape designs is the fruit of Bradley James Bontems Landscape Design and Contracting's ingenious creativity, rendering the entire space both historically charming and modern, seamless and harmonious.
