High-altitude forest soils on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau harbor diverse microbial communities, where specialists and generalists drive essential ecological processes. This study investigates bacterial and fungal subcommunities along Shergyla Mountain's elevation gradient (3,900 m to timberline), uncovering how elevation and nutrient availability shape their assembly. Generalists, with broad niches and high dispersal, are governed by stochastic processes, while specialists, influenced by deterministic factors like environmental selection, play keystone roles in ecosystem stability. Network analyses reveal specialists' central positions in microbial interactions, and nitrogen-cycling genes exhibit significant correlations with their diversity, highlighting their importance in nutrient cycling. By elucidating the environmental sensitivity and functional resilience of microbial specialists, this work emphasizes their irreplaceable role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem integrity in fragile high-altitude forests, informing targeted conservation strategies in rapidly changing mountain environments.
