Donald Trump beat Vice President Kamala Harris to win the presidential election – that much became clear in the early hours Wednesday. But what is becoming increasingly clear now is that Trump benefited from a noticeable shift to the right in nearly every state.

Red states shifted redder when compared to 2020. Trump won Florida by about 10 more percentage points in 2024 than in 2020. Texas made a roughly 8-point shift.

Blue states also shifted toward Trump. New York made an 11-percentage-point jump toward him when compared to 2020. Virginia shifted 5 points in his favor. Rhode Island moved 8 points in his direction.

The shift is helping the former president with the popular vote. Trump is leading Harris by nearly 5 million. A Republican hasn’t won the popular vote since 2004.

And Tuesday’s GOP successes don’t stop there. Republicans took back the Senate, likely setting Trump up for easy Cabinet postings and Supreme Court justice confirmations should vacancies arise.
